An Indian-origin nurse, Achamma Cherian, was critically injured after being stabbed in the neck with scissors by a patient at the Royal Oldham Hospital in Greater Manchester. The attack occurred on Saturday night, while Cherian was performing her duties in the acute medical unit. As per reports, the accused identified as Mohammed Roman Haque, 37, was “angry” that he had to wait for a medical assessment.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as hospital staff rushed to her aid. Emergency services were called immediately, and Cherian was swiftly hospitalised for urgent medical attention. Her injuries have been described as “life-changing,” as she receives treatment.

The incident has sparked outrage among healthcare professionals and the broader community. Health Secretary Wes Streeting condemned the attack, stating that healthcare workers should be able to care for patients without fear of violence as Nurses are the backbone of NHS.

The British Indian Nurses Association Expressed its shock and concern regarding the incident. In a statement, they emphasized that while the attack was not racially motivated, it highlights an alarming trend of violence against healthcare workers. Achamma Cherian has been a dedicated member of the Royal Oldham Hospital staff for nearly a decade.

This attack comes amid growing concerns about safety in hospitals across the UK. In recent years, there has been an alarming rise in incidents of violence against healthcare workers.
