The UK celebrated Diwali with renewed hopes for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India, during a special reception at Lancaster House in London. Catherine West, the parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, emphasized the government’s commitment to finalize the FTA negotiations, which were previously paused due to elections in both nations.
West referred to the earlier goal set by the Conservative government to complete the FTA by Diwali 2022, expressing optimism that this year’s festivities could mark a “magic moment” for the agreement. She encouraged attendees to pray for successful negotiations, highlighting the potential to enhance the existing £38.1 billion bilateral trading partnership.
The event featured traditional Hindu prayers and the symbolic lighting of candles, coinciding with Bandi Chhor Divas, a Sikh celebration symbolizing light overcoming darkness. Prime Minister Keir Starmer also participated in Diwali celebrations at 10 Downing Street, reinforcing the significance of unity and cultural respect in these challenging times.
Starmer remarked on the importance of celebrating light amid global volatility, stating, “The light triumphing over darkness is very important… it gives us hope.” The festivities included performances that showcased traditional values of righteousness and integrity, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the celebration.
As discussions on the FTA are expected to resume soon, both governments are keen to solidify their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The Diwali celebrations not only honored cultural traditions but also served as a platform for diplomatic engagement and economic aspirations between the UK and India.
