On October 22, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, marking Iran’s first participation as a full member since joining the bloc on January 1. This meeting underscored the commitment of both nations to enhance cooperation within the BRICS framework and address pressing regional issues.

The discussions focused on critical topics, including the importance of resolving regional conflicts and promoting human rights without bias. Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s eagerness to deepen ties with India, particularly regarding the Chabahar Port development. India holds a long-term lease on this strategic port, which is vital for connecting the North-South Transport Corridor to Russia. Modi referred to the port as “the biggest pillar of bilateral cooperation,” highlighting its significance in strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri characterized the meeting as “fruitful,” reflecting a shared vision for collaboration. This was their first meeting since President Pezeshkian’s election as the ninth President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Prime Minister congratulated him on his recent victory and reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening the age-old bilateral ties with Iran.

Both leaders emphasized repeatedly the shared historical and civilizational ties that underpin their bilateral relations and discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in various fields of bilateral ties. The seamless connectivity in the region was a theme of this meeting.

Both leaders also discussed the situation in West Asia. Prime Minister Modi expressed his deep concern over the escalating conflict and reiterated India’s call for the protection of civilians and the prevention of harm to civilians. He emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions. President Pezeshkian also emphasized the need for peace and harmony in the region and the role that India could play in de-escalating the conflict, given its good relations with all the parties involved.

This meeting between Modi and Pezeshkian signifies a strengthening of ties between India and Iran at a time when both countries are navigating shifting geopolitical landscapes. Their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations through initiatives like the Chabahar Port project illustrates a shared vision for economic growth and regional stability.
