The Indian diaspora is one of the largest and most vibrant in the world, with millions of people of Indian origin residing outside their homeland. As of 2024, several countries have significant Indian populations, each contributing uniquely to the cultural and economic landscapes of their host nations such as Mauritius, United Kingdom, USA and Canada.

Mauritius stands out with approximately 894,500 Indians, making up about 70% of its total population. This island nation has cultivated a rich cultural tapestry influenced heavily by Indian traditions, evident in its festivals, cuisine, and daily life. Major cities like Port Louis and Quatre Bornes are hubs for Indian culture, offering a sense of home for expatriates. The affordability of living and the beauty of Mauritius further attract Indians seeking a peaceful life abroad.

The United States is home to over 5.4 million Indians, making it the country with the largest Indian population outside India. This demographic is characterized by its diversity, with Indians excelling in various sectors such as technology, healthcare, and academia. Notable figures like Sundar Pichai (CEO of Alphabet) and Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft) exemplify the success stories within this community. The Indian American community significantly contributes to the U.S. economy, owning about 60% of hotels in the country and generating substantial tax revenue.

The UK boasts around 1.76 million Indians, reflecting a deep-rooted historical connection due to colonial ties. Cities like London have vibrant Indian neighborhoods filled with restaurants, shops, and cultural festivals that celebrate Indian heritage. The presence of Indian professionals in various fields enhances the multicultural fabric of British society, making it a welcoming place for Indians.

Canada has become an increasingly popular destination for Indians, with approximately 1.69 million residents identifying as Indian or of Indian descent. The country’s policies promoting multiculturalism, and its strong economy attract many skilled professionals from India. Cities like Toronto and Vancouver are known for their diverse communities where Indian culture thrives through food festivals and cultural events.

The UAE hosts around 3.4 million Indians, constituting a significant portion of its population. This expatriate community plays a crucial role in various sectors such as construction, healthcare, and hospitality. The UAE’s favorable economic conditions and lack of income tax make it an attractive destination for Indian workers seeking better opportunities abroad.

Malaysia: Home to nearly 3 million Indians, primarily Tamils and Malayalees, who contribute to the country’s rich cultural diversity.

Saudi Arabia: Approximately 2.6 million Indians reside here, making up about 10-13% of the total population.

Singapore: With around 650,000 Indians, Singapore is known for its ‘Little India’ district that showcases Indian culture prominently.
