US President Donald Trump signed into law a legislation to name a Houston post office after Sikh American police officer Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal who was gunned down a year ago in line of duty during a routine traffic stop in Houston.

The bipartisan legislation was unanimously passed by the US House of Representatives in September and Trump signed it into law on December 22. The legislation designates the United States Postal Service (USPS) office at 315 Addicks Howell Road in Houston, Texas, to be renamed “Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal Post Office Building.”

Sandeep Dhaliwal who was sheriff’s deputy in Harris County Texas was shot and killed during a traffic stop on September 27, 2019. He received a “trailblazer”  recognition in 2015 for being the first Indian American Sikh to be an officer in Texas to wear a traditional Sikh turban and beard.

Senator Ted Cruz stated that Dhaliwal was a hero and trailblazer whose commitment to his faith will inspire generations of Sikhs as well as other religious minorities to serve in law enforcement.

This post office will be the second in the United States to be named after an Indian American. The first post office was named in the year 2006 in Southern California after Indian American Congressman Dalip Singh Saund.
