Disgruntled regionalist political party MNS behind the attack, police say.
Two cases of vandalism at Amazon warehouses at Mumbai and Pune have been reported on Friday, Workers allegedly belonging to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) marched into the e-commerce giant’s warehouses located in Mumbai’s Andheri region and Pune city and destroyed and vandalized the property, police said.
The MNS workers allegedly targeted the online retail giant due to the absence of Marathi language as an option for navigation on its app and the absence of the language on its poster. The officials stated that the alleged damaged glass objects, LED TV, laptops, printers and so on. The attack on the warehouse in Andheri, Mumbai is reported to have occurred at 1:45 pm India time on Friday. The police said they are under the process of filing a First Information Report (FIR) against at least 8 people.
In a similar incident reported in the Kondhwa area of Pune, a group of 10 smashed windows and other office equipment in an Amazon office.
Amazon has approached a court in Mumbai, which issued a notice to MNS chief Raj Thackeray, asking him to appear in court on 5, January 2021. The firm has filed a civil suit against MNS and its laborers’ union on the grounds of allegedly threatening to block the company’s operation on the basis of its linguistic demand. The court observed to protect the company and staff after a hearing on 13 December, 2020. It has also restricted MNS and its activities from disturbing the working of the organization and its employees’ welfare.
