Indian Americans through an association of more than 2,100 small and mid-size IT companies in the US namely ITServe have urged lawmakers to double the H-1B quota from the current 65,000 for solving the problem of massive shortage of highly skilled workforce in the nation.

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that technology companies in the US use for hiring tens of thousands of employees with technical expertise each year from countries like India and China.

More than 240 members of ITServe converged in the US capitol recently for the first-ever in-person Congressional advocacy day during which they reached out to Congressmen and Senators to impress upon them about the huge shortage of highly skilled workforce in the country. As per them, this issue is impacting their businesses and the American advantage in general.

In addition, ITServe is seeking lawmakers’ attention to develop the required high-skilled force within the US by increasing investment in STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education.

Along with the Congressional advocacy of ITServe, Raja Krishnamoorthi, an Indian-American Congressman introduced the High-Skilled Immigration Reform for Employment (HIRE) Act to strengthen US competitiveness by bridging the skills gap required for jobs by prospective employers.

These steps will help address concerns of the American employers, including in critical technology sectors, to draw the best talent.

Krishnamoorthi emphasized, “Creating jobs and building the economy of the future requires us to lead the way in technology by developing our domestic workforce while drawing the best talent from around the world.”

“The US needs to maintain its leadership in technology and innovation,” Vinay Mahajan, ITServe Alliance president, said.
