India defeated West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, chasing down a mammoth target of 406 with 39 balls to spare. The victory gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, but the match was dominated by a record-breaking innings from captain Shubman Gill.

Gill remained unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls, reaching his double century in only 117 deliveries, the fastest 200 in ODI history. He surpassed Ishan Kishan’s previous record of 126 balls, set against Bangladesh in 2022. Gill also became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple double centuries in men’s ODIs.

West Indies had earlier produced their highest-ever ODI total, scoring 405 for seven. John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo each scored centuries, making it the first time three West Indies batters had reached three figures in the same ODI innings. Campbell made 101, Hope scored 104 and Jangoo struck 114.

India’s chase began with a 255-run opening partnership between Gill and Rohit Sharma. Rohit scored 101 from 75 balls and crossed the landmark of 12,000 ODI runs during his innings. After Rohit’s dismissal, Gill continued the assault, with Virat Kohli scoring 29 and Ruturaj Gaikwad contributing 31.

India reached 406 for two in 43.3 overs, completing the second-highest successful chase in men’s ODI cricket. Gill’s unbeaten 223 was also the third-highest individual score in men’s ODIs, behind Rohit Sharma’s 264 and Martin Guptill’s 237.

The result sealed the series for India with one match still remaining, while Gill’s record-breaking performance added another landmark to an extraordinary night of ODI cricket.
