A teenage boy was shot dead by unidentified armed individuals in Tamei area of Tamenglong district on Monday morning, police said. The teenager, a resident of Takou village with big Naga population, had reportedly gone alone to Tamei to buy essential food items when he was attacked.
Police said the incident took place at around 10.30 am. Villagers reportedly heard nearly 20 rounds of gunfire from the area and later found the boy dead along a roadside. Police reached the area and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The motive behind the attack has not yet been established, and the identity of those responsible remains unknown. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the incident, according to police.
The killing comes amid continuing tensions and sporadic violence in parts of Manipur. Tamenglong is among the districts that have witnessed recent incidents involving armed groups and civilian casualties.
The latest incident has added to concerns over the safety of civilians in the region, particularly in areas affected by tensions between Naga and Kuki communities. Reports have documented several attacks in Tamenglong and neighbouring districts in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, four people from Kuki-Zo community were killed and a six-year-old boy was injured in two separate attacks in Tamenglong district, according to police. Investigations into those incidents were also underway, with no group immediately claiming responsibility.
