Renowned Manipuri guitarist and music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh, 54, died on Monday after allegedly being assaulted outside his home in Kilokri, southeast Delhi, following an argument over noise and commotion in the neighbourhood. Police have arrested the accused in connection with the case.
According to police, Singh had objected to a group of people allegedly creating a disturbance outside his residence late on Sunday night. What began as an argument reportedly escalated into a physical assault. Singh sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died during treatment.
The incident has triggered outrage among Delhi’s Northeast Indian community and the music fraternity, with calls for a thorough investigation and swift justice. The case has also renewed concerns about the safety and treatment of people from the Northeast living in the national capital. Police said the accused included people associated with food delivery and nearby dhaba staff.
Singh was a prominent figure in Manipur’s rock music scene. He had been associated with bands including Ultra Vires, Phoenix and Eastern Dark, and was known for his work as a guitarist and music teacher in Delhi. He had also collaborated with musicians outside Manipur during his career.
His death has been mourned by fellow musicians and members of the Manipuri community, who remembered him for his contribution to music and his role in mentoring young musicians.
Singh came from a notable musical family. His mother, Chongtham Kamala, is a respected Manipuri singer with a long association with the region’s cultural and film music traditions.
