Indian-origin footballer Maximiliano Araújo has been named in Uruguay’s 46-member preliminary squad for the country’s upcoming international friendly against India in Kolkata on October 6, adding a special connection to a high-profile clash featuring some of world football’s biggest names.
Araújo, whose family roots trace back to Goa, will be part of a Uruguay squad announced on September 5 by newly appointed head coach Diego Forlán. The midfielder made history earlier this year by becoming the first player of Indian origin to score at a FIFA World Cup, further raising interest in his inclusion for the Kolkata fixture.
The provisional squad also includes several established international stars. Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, defender Ronald Araújo and forward Darwin Núñez are among the prominent names selected. José María Giménez, Lucas Torreira, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Facundo Pellistri also feature in the list.
The match will mark one of India’s biggest football assignments this year, with the two-time FIFA World Cup champions set to face the Blue Tigers at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. India will also play Brazil in Kolkata on October 3, following a September 25 friendly against Panama in Bengaluru.
Forlán’s appointment adds another layer of significance to the fixture. The former Uruguay captain and 2010 World Cup Golden Ball winner has begun a new chapter with the national team after Marcelo Bielsa’s departure. Forlán also has a connection with Indian football, having played for Mumbai City FC during the Indian Super League’s 2016 season.
With Uruguay bringing a star-studded squad and Araújo’s Indian heritage adding an emotional connection, the October 6 encounter is expected to be a major attraction for football fans in Kolkata and across India.
