Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday approved the transfer of technologies developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for conventional missile systems to eligible Indian industries, in a move aimed at strengthening domestic defence manufacturing and advancing the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat push.
Under the technology-transfer initiative, Indian companies will be able to undertake domestic production of DRDO-developed systems, subject to applicable qualifications, certifications and regulatory requirements. The Defence Ministry said the move is intended to increase industry participation and help transition technologies from the research and development stage to industrial-scale manufacturing.
The approval comes amid a broader expansion of India’s indigenous defence manufacturing sector. According to government data cited in recent reports, defence production reached ₹1.54 lakh crore in 2024-25, while defence exports have also grown significantly in recent years.
The latest decision further strengthens the role of private industry in India’s defence ecosystem, with DRDO increasingly working with domestic companies to support the development and manufacture of advanced defence technologies.
The ministry said the technology-transfer framework would strengthen India’s industrial capabilities while supporting the long-term objective of building a more self-reliant defence manufacturing base.
