India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 5-3 in a high-scoring Pool D clash at the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup on Wednesday, securing a place in the tournament’s second round. The victory gave India six points from three matches and ended Pakistan’s campaign at the World Cup.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh and forward Abhishek were the key contributors for India, scoring two goals each, while Hardik Singh added the fifth. India made a strong start and established an early advantage, putting Pakistan under pressure from the opening stages.
Pakistan, however, responded strongly and managed to stay within striking distance as the match progressed. India eventually took a 5-2 lead, but Pakistan reduced the deficit in the final quarter. The Indian defence held firm thereafter to secure the win and progression to the next phase.
The result was particularly important for India after their 2-4 defeat against England in the previous pool match had made the final fixture against Pakistan crucial for qualification. India ultimately finished second in Pool D behind England, who topped the group with nine points.
While the victory strengthens India’s position in the tournament, their defensive performance remains an area of concern. India conceded three goals against Pakistan, continuing a pattern of defensive lapses that had surfaced earlier in the competition. The team will need to address these weaknesses as the level of competition increases in the second round.
Pakistan’s defeat brought its World Cup campaign to an end, while India advanced with renewed momentum. The tournament is being played in Belgium and the Netherlands, with the men’s competition running through August 30.
