The Mathurvaishya community came together on August 9, 2026, to celebrate India’s Independence Day and serve the community by organizing a water distribution camp during the Indian Independence Day Parade on Oak Tree Road in Edison, New Jersey.
As thousands of community members gathered to celebrate India’s independence, Mathurvaishya volunteers provided free drinking water to parade participants, spectators, families, and visitors. The initiative reflected the community’s spirit of seva (selfless service), compassion, unity, and giving back to society.
Celebrating Independence Through Seva
Independence Day is more than a celebration of India’s freedom-it is an opportunity to remember the sacrifices of those who helped build the nation and to reflect on the values of freedom, responsibility, unity, diversity, and service to others.
For the Indian diaspora living in the United States, such celebrations carry a special meaning. They provide an opportunity for families and especially the younger generation growing up in America to stay connected with their Indian heritage and understand the history, sacrifices, and values behind India’s independence.
The water distribution camp offered a simple but meaningful lesson in this spirit. Our young volunteers experienced firsthand that celebrating our heritage is not only about attending a parade or carrying the national flag-it is also about serving others, working together, and contributing positively to the community.
Despite the scorching summer heat, young volunteers enthusiastically helped set up the camp, organize supplies, and distribute water throughout the parade. Their participation demonstrated that the values of seva, teamwork, respect, and community responsibility can be carried forward by the next generation, even while growing up thousands of miles away from India.
Young Volunteers Lead by Example
A special appreciation goes to the young volunteers who stepped forward and worked tirelessly in the challenging weather. Their energy, enthusiasm, and willingness to serve were among the highlights of the initiative.
The experience also provided an important opportunity for parents and community elders to pass cultural values to the next generation-not simply through words, but through participation and action.
“Our children are growing up in the United States, but our values, culture, and connection to our roots remain an important part of who they are. When our young generation participates in community service during an Indian Independence Day celebration, they learn that patriotism is not only about remembering our history-it is also about becoming responsible citizens and serving society,” said the Mathurvaishya community organizers.
The initiative brought Mathurvaishya families and community members together in a meaningful way, combining celebration with service and demonstrating how cultural events can become opportunities to strengthen community bonds.
