With a crucial Test assignment in Sri Lanka just days away, India head coach Gautam Gambhir has delivered a strong message to his players, urging them to be fully prepared for every situation as the team looks to begin the two-match series on a positive note.
Addressing the squad ahead of the tour, Gambhir stressed that success in Test cricket depends on thorough preparation, discipline and the ability to respond to every challenge from the very first ball. He called on the players to ensure that every aspect of their game is in place before stepping onto the field, underlining that there can be no room for complacency in overseas conditions.
The series, scheduled from August 15 to 27, assumes added significance for India as it forms part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle. The opening Test will be played at the Galle International Stadium before the action shifts to Colombo for the second match.
India’s preparations will begin with a three-day warm-up fixture against a Sri Lanka XI, giving the touring side an opportunity to acclimatise to spin-friendly conditions and assess combinations before the opening Test. The practice match is expected to play a key role in fine-tuning the batting order and bowling plans.
Gambhir also sought to instil confidence within the dressing room, welcoming newcomers while reiterating that every player must be mentally and physically ready to shoulder responsibility. His remarks come after India’s inconsistent run in the longer format, making the Sri Lanka tour an important opportunity to regain momentum and strengthen its standing in the World Test Championship race.
The Indian team will now look to translate its preparations into performances as it aims to secure a successful start to an important Test campaign in Sri Lanka.
