India formally began its journey towards hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games after receiving the Commonwealth Games flag during the closing ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Games. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha accepted the flag on behalf of the country, marking the official transition of hosting responsibilities to Ahmedabad for the centenary edition of the Games.
The symbolic handover was accompanied by a vibrant cultural presentation showcasing India’s heritage, music and traditions, offering the global audience a preview of what Ahmedabad aims to deliver in 2030. The ceremony marked the beginning of a four-year countdown to one of the biggest sporting events ever hosted by India since the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
India concluded the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a strong fourth-place finish, winning 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. Boxing emerged as the country’s most successful discipline, while athletes also impressed in athletics, para-athletics, judo and weightlifting, providing momentum ahead of the home Games.
Ahmedabad, which secured the hosting rights after Commonwealth Sport ratified India’s bid, is expected to stage the Games using upgraded world-class sporting infrastructure with an emphasis on sustainability and long-term legacy. The Union Cabinet has already approved the necessary agreements and support for hosting the event, describing it as an opportunity to boost tourism, generate employment and strengthen India’s global sporting profile.
