Seventeen-year-old Tanvi Sharma announced herself on the global badminton stage by winning the women’s singles title at the BWF Taipei Open Super 300, becoming the first Indian in 18 years to lift the prestigious trophy. The teenager defeated Vietnam’s Thuy Linh Nguyen in straight games, 21-16, 21-16, to claim the biggest title of her career and emerge as one of India’s brightest sporting prospects.
The triumph ended India’s long wait for a women’s singles champion at the Taipei Open since Saina Nehwal’s title-winning campaign in 2008. Tanvi also became the youngest champion in the tournament’s history across all categories, underlining her remarkable rise in international badminton.
Displaying composure beyond her years, the Punjab-born shuttler controlled the final from the outset with aggressive stroke play, sharp movement and disciplined defence. She maintained her dominance throughout both games, giving her experienced opponent little opportunity to stage a comeback. The victory earned Tanvi her maiden BWF World Tour Super 300 title and marked a significant milestone in her rapidly developing career.
Tanvi’s breakthrough comes after an impressive season in which she consistently challenged higher-ranked opponents on the international circuit. Earlier this year, she produced notable performances at top-tier events, signalling her readiness to compete with the world’s best. Her latest success is expected to boost her international ranking and strengthen India’s next generation of women’s singles players.
The victory is also a timely boost for Indian badminton, which has been searching for emerging stars to build on the legacy of champions such as Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu.
