England defeated India by 27 runs in a high-scoring third and final One-Day International at Lord’s on Sunday to seal the three-match series 2-1, overcoming a spirited chase led by Rohit Sharma.
Opting to bat first, England posted a formidable 387 for 3 — the highest ODI total recorded at Lord’s. Opener Ben Duckett anchored the innings with a magnificent 141, setting a new record for the highest individual ODI score at the iconic venue. Jacob Bethell contributed a fluent 91 in a 192-run opening partnership, while Joe Root remained unbeaten on 74. Jos Buttler’s explosive 41 not out from just 13 deliveries powered England to a daunting total with a late surge.
India began their chase confidently as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill stitched together a 147-run opening stand. Rohit produced a masterclass, smashing 138 off 110 balls with 17 fours and five sixes, while Gill added a composed 77 to keep the visitors firmly in contention.
Virat Kohli chipped in with a well-made 74, but England regained control when Bethell dismissed Rohit in the 39th over. Sam Curran then turned the match decisively, claiming four wickets, including the crucial scalp of Kohli, to derail India’s pursuit.
Despite India’s determined batting effort, the visitors finished on 360 for 7, falling 27 runs short of the target. England’s disciplined bowling in the closing overs proved decisive as the hosts secured their first bilateral ODI series victory over the world’s top-ranked side since 2018.
The result capped an entertaining series marked by aggressive batting displays from both teams. While India will draw positives from Rohit Sharma’s outstanding form and Gill’s consistency, England will take confidence from their balanced all-round performance and record-breaking batting effort ahead of future international assignments.
