India’s young left-arm spinner Shree Charani has reached the pinnacle of international cricket by becoming the world’s No. 1 ranked bowler in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings, overtaking England’s Linsey Smith. The achievement marks a major milestone in Charani’s career and adds another landmark moment to India’s growing success in women’s cricket.
Charani’s rise to the top came after a series of impressive performances, particularly during the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, where her accuracy, control and ability to take crucial wickets helped her climb the rankings ladder. She became the first Indian spinner to claim the top position in the latest T20I bowling rankings update.
The 21-year-old spinner surpassed England’s Linsey Smith, who had recently held the No. 1 position after a strong run of form before the tournament. Charani’s consistent displays with the ball pushed her ahead of a highly competitive field featuring some of the world’s leading bowlers.
Charani’s achievement follows a remarkable run in the global tournament, where she also matched the record for the most wickets taken by an Indian bowler in a single Women’s T20 World Cup edition. Her performance equalled the mark set by former India spinner Poonam Yadav, highlighting her impact on the biggest stage.
The left-arm spinner’s success has been seen as a reflection of India’s increasing strength in women’s cricket, especially in the bowling department. Alongside experienced campaigners, emerging players like Charani have provided the team with fresh energy and match-winning ability.
Charani’s journey to the top of the rankings has also strengthened India’s presence in the international cricketing landscape. Her achievement places her among the elite bowlers in the shortest format and offers another inspiration for young cricketers across the country.
With the Women’s T20 World Cup continuing, all eyes will be on Charani as she looks to maintain her form and help India challenge for the global title.
