India opener Shafali Verma has credited senior batter Smriti Mandhana for helping her stay composed during high-pressure situations, saying the experienced left-hander constantly reminds her to remain calm on the field. The remark comes as the opening pair continues to play a pivotal role in India’s campaign at the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup.
Speaking after India’s recent successes, Shafali said Mandhana’s guidance has been instrumental in managing pressure and maintaining focus during crucial moments. According to the young opener, Smriti frequently encourages her to keep a cool head rather than getting carried away by the intensity of the match.
The partnership between the two batters has emerged as one of India’s greatest strengths. They recently stitched together a 115-run opening stand, providing India with a strong platform and underlining the chemistry they have developed over the years. Their aggressive yet balanced approach at the top of the order has helped India make a strong start in the global tournament.
Shafali, known for her fearless stroke play, said that having Mandhana at the other end gives her confidence. The 29-year-old vice-captain’s experience and ability to read match situations have helped Shafali channel her attacking instincts more effectively. The youngster added that communication between the pair remains simple and positive, allowing them to adapt quickly to different situations.
Former players and experts have also highlighted the importance of the Mandhana-Shafali opening combination, describing it as crucial to India’s hopes of lifting the T20 World Cup trophy. With both batters finding rhythm at the right time, India will hope the duo continues to provide explosive starts in the matches ahead.
