In a major diplomatic assurance, Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Myanmar will not allow its territory to be used for activities threatening India’s security. The promise came during the Myanmar leader’s first official visit to India, which runs from May 30 to June 3, 2026.

The meeting between PM Modi and U Min Aung Hlaing at Hyderabad House in New Delhi focused heavily on border security, trade, defence cooperation, and India’s development assistance to Myanmar. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who briefed the media after the talks, said the President “reiterated the assurance that Myanmar’s territory would not be permitted to be used against India’s security interests”.

Prime Minister Modi raised serious concerns about armed groups operating near the India-Myanmar border and the spillover effects of Myanmar’s internal conflict on northeast in India. He highlighted how military operations close to the frontier and activities of these armed groups have caused damage on the Indian side and driven refugees into India. Modi urged Myanmar authorities to ensure their military actions do not harm civilians living on the Indian side of the border.

Both leaders reaffirmed India’s support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The joint statement released after the meeting stressed the need to prevent misuse of sovereign territory for activities harmful to either country’s security. India positioned itself as a “steadfast and trusted partner” committed to deepening security cooperation with Myanmar, with defence cooperation focusing on capacity building.

This visit marks a significant moment in India-Myanmar relations, as border security and refugee flows have become urgent issues for New Delhi. The assurance from President U Min Aung Hlaing is seen as a key outcome that could help ease long-standing security concerns along India’s eastern frontier.
