In a landmark move for India’s online retail sector, Amazon, Eternal (i.e. Zomato), Meesho, Swiggy, and Zepto have jointly launched the Digital Commerce Coalition, a new industry body dedicated to advancing the country’s digital commerce ecosystem. The coalition was officially announced on Monday, June 1, through a joint statement released by the founding members.
The five major e-commerce and quick-commerce companies came together to create a unified platform that will address shared challenges facing the industry. According to the coalition’s release, the initiative aims to improve customer experiences, strengthen consumer trust, expand opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses, bolster supply chains, and support delivery partners across India.
The Digital Commerce Coalition will focus on four core priorities: strengthening consumer trust, enabling responsible innovation, promoting equitable economic participation, and fostering people and planet-positive outcomes across the digital economy. The body will serve as a common forum for industry dialogue, research initiatives, policy discussions, and stakeholder engagement on matters affecting India’s rapidly growing online commerce sector.
The coalition’s secretariat will be managed by Koan Advisory Group, a public policy consulting firm. As India’s digital commerce space expands beyond major metropolitan cities into smaller towns and cities, the new industry body intends to represent the interests of digital-first e-commerce companies and contribute to broader economic development.
This collaborative effort marks a significant step toward sustainable growth in India’s e-commerce sector, bringing together leading players who previously operated independently. The coalition expects to drive industry-wide improvements while promoting responsible growth that benefits consumers, small businesses, delivery partners, and the environment.
