Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar will receive Israel’s highest civilian bravery honour for his role in preventing a potential aviation disaster after an alleged cockpit attack aboard a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv, Israeli President Isaac Herzog has announced. The award recognises Machchhar’s courage and professionalism despite sustaining serious injuries during the September 30 incident. Six Israeli passengers who helped restrain the attacker were honoured for their actions in a ceremony held in Jerusalem.

Machchhar was commanding flydubai Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board, when his Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked him inside the cockpit. The incident triggered a rapid descent and prompted the aircraft to divert to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew members to overpower the co-pilot. Other pilots aboard the aircraft subsequently helped regain control and ensure a safe landing, averting what could have been a major tragedy.

Announcing the honour, Herzog praised Machchhar’s bravery and professional conduct, saying his actions had helped avert a catastrophe. The Israeli president said he would present the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism once the captain had recovered sufficiently.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also praised the Indian pilot, describing him as a hero and acknowledging his role in saving the lives of those aboard the aircraft. Netanyahu has invited Machchhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in Israel’s Independence Day celebrations.

The incident has prompted an investigation by authorities in the United Arab Emirates into the alleged attack and the co-pilot’s motives. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the cockpit assault and possible security lapses.

Machchhar, who is recovering in Abu Dhabi, has received widespread recognition for his actions from Indian and Israeli leaders. The award announcement underscores the international appreciation for his presence of mind and determination during a critical in-flight emergency.
