Amazon has announced another round of job cuts, with fewer than 1,000 white-collar positions being eliminated globally, including roles in India, the US and the UK. The latest reductions primarily affect the company’s Stores division, which oversees its core e-commerce operations, even as its major festive shopping event is underway.
In India, at least 100 employees are reportedly affected, mainly across retail and customer-service functions, according to people familiar with the development. The cuts came just as Amazon’s Great Indian Festival began on October 7, adding to the contrast between the company’s large-scale festive business activity and its ongoing workforce restructuring.
Amazon confirmed the workforce reduction but described it as involving a “small number” of roles. The company said it had adjusted parts of its Stores business to better align its structure with current priorities. Reports indicate that affected teams include customer service, selling partner services, marketplace support and engineering roles.
The latest cuts follow a much larger restructuring programme in which Amazon eliminated about 30,000 corporate jobs between late 2025 and January 2026. The company has continued to streamline its workforce while redirecting resources towards emerging priorities, particularly artificial intelligence.
Amazon’s workforce changes come alongside plans for significant investment in AI infrastructure. The company is preparing to spend about $220 billion on data centres, chips and related infrastructure, with much of the investment expected to support AI workloads.
Despite the latest layoffs, Amazon continues to invest in India. The company recently opened a large Bengaluru campus expected to support thousands of employees across e-commerce, payments, technology and seller services. The latest job cuts therefore appear to reflect a restructuring of roles and priorities rather than a broader withdrawal from the Indian market.
