Smriti Mandhana has been named India women’s captain. The 30-year-old left-handed opener brings considerable international and leadership experience to the role. Mandhana has represented India since 2013 and has already captained the national side in 18 T20Is and four ODIs. She has also led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to two Women’s Premier League titles, in 2024 and 2026.

Her elevation follows Harmanpreet Kaur’s decision to relinquish the captaincy after a distinguished stint at the helm. Kaur, who remains available as a player, led India to their maiden Women’s 50-over World Cup title on home soil in 2025. During her captaincy, India also secured four T20 Asia Cup titles and two Asian Games gold medals.

Mandhana’s appointment had been widely anticipated, given her long association with the national team and her experience as Kaur’s deputy. The BCCI said her understanding of the game and leadership credentials would be valuable as India enters a new phase.

Mandhana said leading India was a “special honour” and acknowledged Kaur’s contribution to the team over the years. She added that she looked forward to working with the squad and taking Indian cricket forward.

Her first assignment as full-time white-ball captain will come against Zimbabwe, with India scheduled to play three T20Is and three ODIs from October 16. The transition puts one of Indian cricket’s most established batters at the centre of the team’s next chapter.
