Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and flydubai captain Smit Machchhar to participate in Israel’s Independence Day torch-lighting ceremony next year, describing the honour as one of the country’s highest recognitions. The invitation came during an emotional conversation between PM Netanyahu and Machchhar following a serious cockpit incident on a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight.
Netanyahu praised Machchhar for his conduct during the incident and said he wanted the Indian pilot and Modi to light a ceremonial flame at the Independence Day event. He described Machchhar as a hero for Israel, India and the wider world, while also calling Modi a “great friend”.
The ceremony is held annually at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem and marks the beginning of Israel’s Independence Day celebrations after Memorial Day. Established in 1950, the event traditionally features 12 people who are selected to light torches in recognition of their contributions to Israeli society.
The invitation follows an incident aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Pilot Machchhar was attacked inside the cockpit, prompting an emergency situation that was eventually brought under control after the cockpit door was opened and assistance reached the pilot. The aircraft later made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. UAE authorities have described the incident as a terrorist act, while investigations into the circumstances continue.
During the conversation, Netanyahu thanked Machchhar for his courage and said his actions helped protect those aboard the aircraft.
