Infosys plans to move between a quarter and one-third of its more than 320,000 employees into specialist roles as artificial intelligence (AI) transforms the information technology industry. The Bengaluru-based IT services company also plans to build a team of about 6,000 “frontier engineers” to support advanced technology and AI-driven client projects.
The plans were discussed at Infosys’ annual Americas Confluence in Washington, DC, attended by company partners, advisers and analysts. The proposed specialist roles are expected to focus on areas including AI, data, advanced engineering and clients’ industry domains. The move reflects the company’s effort to adapt its workforce to changing technology requirements and the growing use of AI in IT services.
Infosys is also looking to recruit specialised talent from leading Indian institutes and US campuses, putting it in competition with AI companies and research organisations for highly skilled engineers.
This comes as AI changes both the skills required in IT services and the way technology projects are delivered and priced. Infosys has said its broader AI strategy involves equipping employees with AI capabilities while simultaneously developing deeper engineering and domain expertise for AI-first services.
