Dr. Tara Shajan, a distinguished nursing executive and healthcare leader, was honored for her visionary leadership and contributions to healthcare and community service during a recognition ceremony hosted by the Art 4 All Foundation.
The event brought together approximately 200 invited guests to recognize accomplished physicians and healthcare leaders representing diverse specialties and areas of service. Dr. Shajan held a distinctive place among the honorees as the only nurse recognized alongside an accomplished group of physicians, highlighting the increasingly influential role of nursing leadership across today’s healthcare system.
During the ceremony, Dr. Shajan received multiple prestigious recognitions for her leadership and service, including a Citation from New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, Special Recognition from U.S. House Representative Thomas Suozzi, and Special Congressional Recognition from U.S. Member of Congress Laura Gillen.
The honor acknowledged her commitment to advancing patient-centered care, strengthening nursing practice and leadership, advocating for patients and healthcare professionals, and promoting greater access to quality healthcare within the community.
Dr. Shajan currently serves as Chief Nursing Officer at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center (KPC), New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH), where she provides executive nursing leadership with a focus on clinical excellence, patient safety, workforce development, quality improvement, and organizational advancement.
Her leadership extends beyond her executive role. Dr. Shajan serves as Vice President of the National Association of Indian Nurses of America (NAINA) and as an Advisory Board Member of the Indian Nurses Association of New York (INA-NY). Through these leadership roles, she has remained actively engaged in advancing the nursing profession, developing future nurse leaders, strengthening professional collaboration, and supporting initiatives that benefit nurses and the communities they serve.
Being recognized alongside distinguished physicians carries particular significance for the nursing profession. The honor reflects the essential contribution of nurse executives and nurse leaders not only to bedside care, but also to healthcare strategy, patient advocacy, workforce development, quality and safety, and the transformation of healthcare delivery.
