A Talent for Murder, starring Oscar‑winner Helen Mirren, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, offering audiences a tense, suspenseful thriller built around legendary crime writer Patricia Highsmith. Mirren delivers a commanding performance, capturing Highsmith’s sharp wit, prickly personality, and the enduring shadow of her most famous creation, Tom Ripley.
Set in 1995, the film imagines Highsmith living in near‑total isolation in the Swiss Alps. Her days are spent among her books, her cats, and a striking collection of antique weapons. Though her health is declining, her mind remains fierce and mischievous.
Her solitude is interrupted by Edward Ridgeway (Alden Ehrenreich), a young publishing agent sent from New York to persuade her to write one final Ripley novel. Highsmith rejects the idea outright until she proposes a darker challenge. If Ridgeway wants Ripley to return, he must help her devise the perfect murder, a game that quickly spirals into something far more dangerous.
Although Highsmith is the centre of the story, the plot is entirely fictional. “It’s a mystery, it’s a thriller, by no means is it a biopic,” Mirren said at Roy Thomson Hall during TIFF. “It was a real page‑turner because it was always unexpected. We put our heart and love into the movie.”
The film thrives on the tension between its two leads. Mirren’s Highsmith is magnetic, unpredictable, and darkly funny, while Ehrenreich plays Ridgeway with a slippery charm that keeps his true intentions hidden. Their exchanges crackle with sharp dialogue and shifting power dynamics.

Mirren reflected on the challenge of portraying a figure as complex as Highsmith. “Patricia Highsmith was a famous personality within a small intellectual group,” she said. “I wanted to recreate that personality, that voice, that physicality as closely as I could. It was a very important part of the process.”
Filming, she added, often felt like performing live theatre and the production relied on long, uninterrupted takes. “We did so many pages in one day, a 20‑page scene over two days,” Mirren recalled. “It was intense relationship dialogue. You had to operate on instinct. We had one week of rehearsal a year before, which was incredibly valuable. It felt like theatre – present, immediate, no turning back. You’re lucky if you get a second take. It was an adventure, a wonderful adventure.”
