Gautam Adani and his family have reclaimed the top position on the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026, overtaking Mukesh Ambani and his family, even as India’s dollar billionaire population reached a record 391, according to the latest report released Wednesday.
Adani’s wealth increased 13% to ₹9.23 lakh crore ($96 billion), while Ambani’s wealth declined 10% to ₹8.63 lakh crore ($90 billion). The difference between the two fortunes stood at approximately ₹59,400 crore. The ranking is based on wealth figures recorded as of August 24, 2026.
The 15th edition of the Hurun India Rich List features 1,810 individuals with wealth of at least ₹1,000 crore. Their combined wealth rose 12.8% year-on-year to ₹187.5 lakh crore, equivalent to nearly half of India’s gross domestic product. The country added 27 dollar billionaires over the past year, taking the total to 391.
Steel magnate LN Mittal and family moved into third place after their wealth surged 93% to ₹3.39 lakh crore. Cyrus Poonawalla and family ranked fourth, while Roshni Nadar Malhotra and family stood fifth.
Artificial intelligence also emerged as a new wealth-creation sector in the 2026 list. Nineteen individuals associated with AI were included, with combined wealth of ₹3.07 lakh crore. Fifteen of them were new entrants.
Mumbai remained India’s largest wealth hub with 465 people on the list, followed by New Delhi with 236 and Bengaluru with 129. Self-made entrepreneurs accounted for 70% of those featured, highlighting the growing contribution of entrepreneurship to India’s wealth landscape.
