Actor Rashmika Mandanna is set to portray legendary Carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi in an upcoming biopic, an announcement that has drawn attention to one of India’s most celebrated musical figures. The film was announced on Subbulakshmi’s 110th birth anniversary, with the makers expected to unveil its title and Mandanna’s first look.
The announcement marks the beginning of a cinematic project centred on the life and legacy of the iconic singer, whose contribution to Indian classical music continues to resonate across generations. Mandanna’s casting brings a contemporary film star into a role associated with an extraordinary musical and cultural legacy.
The biopic is expected to explore Subbulakshmi’s journey as a Carnatic vocalist and her place in India’s artistic history. Born in 1916, she became internationally recognised for her performances and was widely admired for bringing Indian classical music to audiences beyond its traditional boundaries.
Subbulakshmi was the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. She was also awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the Padma Vibhushan, among other distinctions. Her rendition of devotional music, including the widely remembered “Venkateswara Suprabhatam”, remains part of India’s cultural soundscape.
