Priyadarshan’s Haiwaan, starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, has received mixed responses from critics, with the film’s dark premise and lead performances earning appreciation but its uneven screenplay, lengthy runtime and inconsistent tone drawing criticism. The thriller, released in theatres on September 11, marks the actors’ reunion after 18 years.
The film follows Shyam, a visually challenged man played by Saif Ali Khan, who becomes entangled in a dangerous situation while trying to protect a young girl. Akshay Kumar plays Parshuram, a ruthless antagonist whose presence drives the central conflict. The story is adapted from Priyadarshan’s 2016 Malayalam film Oppam.
Saif’s portrayal of Shyam has been noted for its restraint. Akshay’s turn as the antagonist, meanwhile, has attracted attention for its departure from his familiar heroic roles, though some reviews felt the character lacked the expected menace.
Some critics found the tonal changes distracting, while others felt the final act offered the film’s strongest stretch.
The supporting cast, including Boman Irani, Rajpal Yadav and Asrani, has also received praise. However, reviewers have pointed to predictable turns, an overextended narrative and a screenplay that struggles to balance suspense, emotion and humour.
With its high-profile reunion and genre shift, Haiwaan arrived with considerable expectations. Early audience reactions have been more positive than several critical reviews, suggesting that the film’s star power and thriller elements may still appeal to viewers seeking a conventional Bollywood entertainer.
