India’s passenger vehicle market witnessed a historic shift in August 2026, with alternative-fuel vehicles overtaking petrol-powered cars for the first time, even as the country recorded its highest-ever vehicle retail sales for the month. According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles together accounted for 41.95% of passenger vehicle sales, compared with 40.85% for petrol.
The shift marks a significant change in consumer preferences, with alternative fuels gaining ground across India’s rapidly evolving automobile market. Just over a year ago, petrol held an advantage of nearly 11 percentage points over the combined alternative-fuel category.
Overall vehicle retail sales reached 24,23,201 units in August, registering a 17.51% year-on-year increase and making it the strongest August on record. However, sales were 6.48% lower than July, when the industry had recorded an all-time monthly high. FADA attributed the month-on-month decline partly to the seasonal monsoon slowdown and a shift in the festive calendar, with major celebrations and related purchases moving into September.
Rural markets emerged as a key driver of growth during the month. Rural vehicle retail sales increased 19.79% year-on-year, outpacing the 15.17% growth recorded in urban markets.
The changing fuel mix comes as consumers increasingly consider alternatives to conventional petrol vehicles. CNG, hybrids and electric vehicles are gaining visibility as manufacturers expand their offerings across price segments.
