The Indo-American Cultural Foundation of Central Jersey (IACFNJ) celebrated India’s Independence Day with a vibrant and patriotic cultural program at the beautiful Shree Swaminarayan Temple, located at 329 Culver Road in South Brunswick, New Jersey. More than 100 members of the local community, including elected officials, community leaders, families, seniors, and young participants, gathered to honor India’s rich heritage, remember the sacrifices of its freedom fighters, and celebrate the enduring friendship, diversity, and cultural contributions of the Indian-American community.
The celebration was hosted by the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in its beautiful outdoor gazebo, providing a warm and welcoming setting for the community gathering. The temple generously provided light refreshments for all attendees, while Patel Brothers of North Brunswick sponsored sweets for everyone, adding a special touch of sweetness and community spirit to the occasion. IACFNJ expressed its sincere appreciation to the temple leadership, Patel Brothers of North Brunswick, volunteers, performers, families, and all those whose support and participation helped make the celebration a memorable success.
The program opened on a spiritual and auspicious note with Ganesh Vandana, seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesha for a successful and meaningful celebration. The audience was then treated to an impressive presentation of Indian classical dance, showcasing the beauty, grace, discipline, and rich traditions of India’s performing arts. The cultural program also featured instrumental performances and patriotic songs, creating an atmosphere filled with pride, enthusiasm, and celebration.

One of the major highlights of the program was a powerful dance drama combined with storytelling, titled “Sangharsh Se Swatantrata Tak.” Through music, narration, dance, and dramatic performances, young artists brought to life inspiring stories from India’s long journey toward freedom. The presentation portrayed the courage, sacrifice, determination, and patriotism of legendary heroes and freedom fighters, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Rani Lakshmibai. The moving performance reminded the audience of the struggles that shaped India’s journey toward independence and emphasized the responsibility of every generation to preserve the values of freedom, unity, sacrifice, and national pride.
The celebration was honored by the presence of several distinguished elected officials and community leaders, including South Brunswick Mayor Charlie Carley, Deputy Mayor Ken Bierman, Councilwoman Archana Grover, North Brunswick Councilman Rajesh Mehta, School Board Members Manpreet Singh and Sonali Sinha, and New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, Dr. Adam Hamaway. The dignitaries extended their warm Independence Day wishes to the Indian-American community and congratulated IACFNJ for organizing the celebration and for its more than two decades of dedicated community service and commitment to promoting Indian culture, traditions, heritage, and diversity throughout Central Jersey.
A particularly proud and emotional moment of the celebration came when the Indian national flag was hoisted by the distinguished dignitaries. The entire gathering then stood together to recite Jana Gana Mana, India’s National Anthem, followed by the Star-Spangled Banner, the National Anthem of the United States. The moment beautifully reflected the community’s deep pride in its Indian heritage while embracing the values, opportunities, responsibilities, and diversity of its adopted homeland, the United States of America.
The celebration demonstrated the true meaning of unity in diversity, bringing together participants from young children and students to senior members of the community. Through music, dance, storytelling, patriotism, and cultural expression, the event created an opportunity for generations to connect with one another and celebrate their shared heritage. The enthusiasm and talent of the young performers were especially inspiring, demonstrating that India’s rich history, traditions, cultural values, and spirit of patriotism are being passed on to the next generation of Indian Americans.
For more than two decades, IACFNJ has played an important role in bringing the community together while preserving and promoting India’s culture, customs, traditions, and heritage. The organization also strives to promote harmony, community engagement, and cultural diversity throughout Central Jersey. Events such as the Independence Day celebration provide an important opportunity for younger generations to understand their roots, appreciate the sacrifices made by those who fought for India’s freedom, and proudly celebrate their Indian heritage while remaining active, engaged, and contributing members of American society.
