India have suffered a major setback ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, with premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah ruled out because of a persistent left knee injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi as his replacement, handing the 29-year-old his maiden call-up to the senior Test squad.
Bumrah, who sustained the injury during the ODI series against England, was initially included in the squad subject to fitness clearance. However, after undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, he failed his final fitness assessment, prompting selectors to prioritise his long-term recovery over an early return. The two-match Test series begins in Galle on August 15, followed by the second Test in Colombo from August 23.
Nabi’s inclusion marks a significant milestone for Indian cricket. The right-arm swing bowler has impressed consistently in domestic cricket, claiming over 100 wickets across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons and playing a pivotal role in Jammu and Kashmir’s rise. He also represented India A during the Sri Lanka tour earlier this year, strengthening his case for national selection.
The call-up is also a remarkable personal achievement for Nabi, whose cricketing journey has been defined by perseverance. From borrowing cricket spikes in his early playing days to earning a place in India’s Test squad, his rise reflects the opportunities created through strong domestic performances.
India, led by captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain KL Rahul, will now rely on their pace reserves to fill the void left by Bumrah, whose absence weakens the bowling attack but opens the door for a promising new talent to make his mark on the international stage.
