India’s impressive run at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow gathered further momentum on Tuesday as weightlifter Harjinder Kaur secured a silver medal in the women’s 69kg category, taking the country’s tally in weightlifting to seven medals and reinforcing the discipline’s status as India’s strongest event at the Games. Harjinder lifted a combined 227kg, comprising 101kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk, to finish second on the podium.
The 28-year-old, who had won bronze at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022, improved on her previous performance with a composed display. Her medal came on the same day that long-distance runner Gulveer Singh scripted history by winning silver in the men’s 10,000m, ending India’s long wait for a Commonwealth Games medal in the event.
With Harjinder’s success, India has now won 15 medals at the Glasgow Games—three gold, nine silver and three bronze—with weightlifting contributing seven of those medals. The country’s gold medals have come through Mirabai Chanu in the women’s 48kg category and para-athlete Sharmila Dhankar in the women’s shot put F57.
India’s silver medallists so far are Rishikanta Singh (men’s 60kg weightlifting), Muthupandi Raja (men’s 65kg weightlifting), Gyaneshwari Yadav (women’s 53kg weightlifting), Valluri Ajaya Babu (men’s 79kg weightlifting), Sarvesh Kushare (men’s high jump), Gulveer Singh (men’s 10,000m) and Harjinder Kaur (women’s 69kg weightlifting). Bronze medals have been won by Bindyarani Devi (women’s 58kg weightlifting), Shilpa K. Shyla (women’s shot put F57) and Jhandu Kumar in para powerlifting.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Harjinder Kaur and Gulveer Singh on their achievements, praising their determination and describing their performances as an inspiration for aspiring athletes. With several medal events still to come, India will look to build on its encouraging start and climb further up the Commonwealth Games medal table.
