The India-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into effect on July 15, marking a significant milestone in bilateral economic ties by reducing tariffs, improving market access and creating new opportunities for businesses, professionals and consumers in both countries. The agreement is expected to boost Indian exports, lower prices of select imported goods such as premium cars and Scotch whisky, and strengthen investment and employment prospects.

Under the pact, India will secure preferential access for a wide range of labour-intensive exports, including textiles, apparel, leather products, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, marine products and processed food. Government estimates suggest that the agreement could substantially increase bilateral trade over the coming years while enhancing India’s competitiveness in the UK market.

Indian professionals are also expected to benefit from simplified mobility provisions. The agreement eases the temporary movement of skilled workers in sectors such as information technology, finance, architecture and consulting, while also improving recognition of professional qualifications in select fields. In addition, provisions on social security contributions are expected to reduce costs for Indian employees temporarily working in the UK.

For Indian consumers, the FTA is likely to make imported premium products more affordable. Tariffs on Scotch whisky and automobiles from the UK will be reduced in phases, leading to lower prices over time. The phased reduction aims to balance consumer benefits with the interests of domestic manufacturers.

The agreement is also expected to encourage greater British investment across manufacturing, financial services, clean energy and technology sectors in India. Businesses on both sides are anticipated to benefit from streamlined customs procedures, improved regulatory cooperation and stronger intellectual property protections.
