Actor-producer Aamir Khan will travel to Melbourne to attend a special screening of Lagaan as part of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne’s (IFFM) celebrations marking the film’s 25th anniversary. The event, scheduled for July 9 at the ACMI cinema, will officially launch the festival’s 17th edition, which will run from August 13 to 23.

Organisers described the tribute as a fitting way to honour one of Indian cinema’s most influential films. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan (2001) remains a landmark in Hindi cinema for its compelling blend of sport, history and patriotism. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, bringing unprecedented global recognition to Indian cinema.

IFFM Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said the festival has always celebrated stories with lasting cultural impact, adding that Lagaancontinues to inspire filmmakers and audiences across generations. She expressed delight at welcoming Khan to Melbourne for the commemorative event, calling it an ideal curtain-raiser for this year’s festival.

According to festival organisers, the screening will highlight the enduring legacy of Lagaan while celebrating Khan’s contribution to Indian and international cinema. The festival, regarded as the largest celebration of Indian cinema outside India, is expected to feature premieres, panel discussions and cultural events alongside appearances by leading filmmakers and actors.

The anniversary celebration underscores Lagaan’s continued relevance a quarter-century after its release. The film not only achieved commercial and critical success but also became a defining moment in Indian filmmaking, cementing its place among the country’s most celebrated cinematic achievements. Khan’s participation is expected to draw significant attention from film enthusiasts and the Indian diaspora in Australia.
