Veteran playback singer Alka Yagnik has spoken about her ongoing health challenges after receiving the prestigious Padma Bhushan award, revealing that the last two years have been a difficult phase in her life. The celebrated singer, whose voice has defined generations of Hindi film music, expressed gratitude for the honour while sharing an emotional update with her fans.
Yagnik was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for her outstanding contribution to Indian music at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The recognition came at a time when the singer has remained away from the public eye due to a rare hearing-related condition that affected her professional life.
Addressing concerns over her health, Yagnik said her journey over the past two years has involved several challenges but added that she is slowly moving forward. She thanked her supporters for their constant love and encouragement, saying the award was a deeply emotional moment for her despite the personal struggles she has faced.
The singer had earlier revealed that she was diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss, a condition affecting the inner ear or auditory nerve. The health issue reportedly led her to step back from regular singing assignments and public appearances.
Known for delivering some of Bollywood’s most memorable songs, Yagnik has had a career spanning more than four decades. From romantic melodies to energetic chartbusters, her voice became a defining feature of Hindi cinema during the 1990s and beyond. She has received several major accolades, including National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards, for her contribution to playback singing.
Following her Padma Bhushan recognition, fellow artists and fans praised her contribution to music and wished her strength during her recovery journey. Many highlighted the singer’s resilience and her lasting impact on Indian film music.
Yagnik’s latest message has also brought attention to hearing health awareness, as she encouraged people to be mindful of factors that can affect hearing. Her return to the spotlight through the Padma honour has become a moment of celebration as well as reflection on her inspiring journey.
