India marked the 12th International Day of Yoga with unique celebrations across the country on Sunday, including a first-of-its-kind underwater yoga demonstration by Indian Navy submariners and a mega event led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kolkata. The celebrations highlighted yoga’s growing global identity as a practice connecting physical fitness, mental well-being and discipline.
Around 40 Indian Navy personnel performed yoga under water as part of the celebrations, showcasing the armed forces’ emphasis on fitness and resilience even in challenging operational environments. The underwater session reflected the Navy’s effort to promote wellness and adaptability among its personnel while marking the significance of the ancient Indian practice.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national International Yoga Day celebrations at Kolkata’s Red Road, where thousands of participants joined the mass yoga session. The 2026 theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” focused on encouraging people of all age groups to adopt yoga as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Addressing participants, Modi emphasised that yoga has evolved beyond a physical exercise routine and become a global movement promoting harmony and unity. He highlighted the role of regular yoga practice in maintaining physical strength, mental balance and overall well-being.
The Kolkata event witnessed large-scale participation as the city hosted the main national celebration for the year. Authorities had prepared for a major gathering, with people from different sections of society joining the event to mark the occasion.
Across India, defence personnel, government institutions, schools and communities organised yoga sessions in different locations. The armed forces also participated widely, demonstrating yoga practices across varied terrains and environments as part of the nationwide observance.
The International Day of Yoga, observed every year on June 21, continues to showcase India’s cultural heritage while promoting the message of health, mindfulness and wellness worldwide. The 2026 celebrations combined traditional practices with modern expressions, from public gatherings in cities to the Navy’s underwater demonstration.
