India significantly increased its petroleum product exports to Africa in May, redirecting shipments from traditional Asian markets amid weakening demand across the region, according to commodity analytics firm Kpler. The shift highlights changing global fuel trade patterns and the growing importance of African markets for Indian refiners.

Data showed that India’s exports of refined petroleum products to Africa surged by 110% month-on-month, reaching approximately 370,000 barrels per day (bpd) in May, compared with 176,000 bpd in April. Although Asia remained the largest destination for Indian fuel exports, volumes to the region declined sharply by 34.4% to 406,000 bpd from 619,000 bpd a month earlier.

Market analysts attributed the redirection to softer demand in several Asian economies and changing global trade dynamics. African nations, facing supply disruptions and seeking alternative fuel sources, emerged as major buyers of Indian petroleum products. The trend was particularly evident in diesel shipments, with reports indicating that more than 80 per cent of India’s diesel exports in May were destined for African markets.

The development comes at a time when global energy trade routes are being reshaped by geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. India, one of the world’s largest refining hubs and a leading exporter of petroleum products, has increasingly adapted its export strategy to respond to changing market conditions.

Despite the decline in Asian demand, India’s petroleum sector continues to support the country’s export performance. Petroleum products have remained a key driver of merchandise exports, benefiting from higher crude oil prices and strong refining activity. Industry experts believe Africa could continue to play a larger role in India’s fuel export strategy if current demand trends persist.
