Renowned filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has voiced strong support for Ranbir Kapoor’s casting as Lord Rama in the upcoming two-part epic Ramayana, calling the actor a “pure actor” who can bring reality and a humane touch to the divine character.
Imtiaz Ali praised Kapoor’s versatility, saying, “Ranbir can do anything as an actor. He should do different roles, and when he does different roles, he’ll become them.” He added, “I am very happy he is doing Lord Rama’s role because he can bring a certain effect or reality to the character. It will be nice to approach Lord Rama’s character in a humane and personal way”.
The Ramayana film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Yash and Namit Malhotra, is a live-action adaptation of the ancient Hindu epic. Ranbir Kapoor will portray Maryada Purushottam Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, in Part One, which is scheduled to release during Diwali 2026. Part Two is set for Diwali 2027.
Imtiaz Ali emphasized that the role will deeply enrich Kapoor as an artist. “It’ll be hugely beneficial for Ranbir to have played Rama because he is the kind of actor who imbibes from the character. He will take from Rama, and that will be so enriching for him,” the filmmaker said.
Ranbir Kapoor recently revealed that the film contains six hours of action and confirmed he has finished shooting for Part One, with work on Part Two beginning soon. Sai Pallavi is reportedly playing Sita, while Yash and Ravi Dubey also feature in the cast.
The teaser for Ramayana, showcasing grand visuals and Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Rama, was released on Thursday and has already sparked widespread anticipation across India. With Imtiaz Ali’s endorsement, expectations for Ranbir Kapoor’s performance continue to rise as the film approaches its Diwali 2026 debut.
