Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has signed a new film titled Samuk, which is being described as India’s biggest alien action spectacle. The film will be directed by Kanishk Varma and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, with Aashin A Shah as co-producer. It is set to release in theatres in 2027.
The project combines survival horror and alien thriller elements on an international scale, according to the makers. Kumar said he was excited to try the new genre and called the script and subject fascinating. “Alien thriller is a totally new genre for me and also for our films. I am very excited about it,” he said in a statement.
The makers said they want to push Indian commercial cinema into a new space by using grounded action, practical effects and large-scale visual world-building. Shah said Samuk is something Indian cinema has not attempted before, and that the aim is to create a world-class alien thriller for audiences.
Varma said the film came from his interest in elite security forces and sci-fi horror films such as Alien and Predator. He said he wanted the creature to feel physically real on set, adding that old-school tactile horror made films like Alien timeless.
The film also brings in an international technical team. Creature FX designer Alec Gillis will design and create the alien creature, while British stunt coordinator Luke Tumber will oversee the action. With the film now announced, Samuk has become one of Akshay Kumar’s most unusual projects in recent years.
