Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as Chief Minister of Assam for his second straight term on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the big event.

The swearing-in happened at Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati, at 11:40 am. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya gave the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and four other ministers. This marks the BJP-led NDA’s third win in a row in Assam after their big victory in the Assembly polls.

Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma? He first became CM in 2021. Now, he is the first non-Congress leader in Assam to serve two terms back-to-back. PM Modi reached Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, where Sarma welcomed him with other BJP leaders.

Many top leaders came to the ceremony. They included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Chirag Paswan. BJP national president Nitin Nabin was there too. Chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from BJP states, top industrialists, Satradhikars, and party workers joined the crowd.

Why does this matter? Sarma’s oath strengthens BJP’s hold in the Northeast. The event showed unity among NDA allies and top party faces. It happened on May 12, 2026, after Governor Acharya named Sarma CM on Sunday under Article 164(1).

The ceremony drew huge crowds and highlighted Assam’s shift from Congress rule. Sarma now leads the new council of ministers for fresh development plans.
