After months of stalemate, political dialogue between the Centre and Ladakh groups will resume on May 22, Union Territory LG declared today.

The talks had been stalled since February 4, when the government’s high-powered committee met with Ladakh representatives but ended without resolution. The two main groups involved are the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), the key platforms leading Ladakh’s political movement.

Ladakh leaders have been demanding statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule for greater democratic protection. The MHA objected to these demands, citing financial viability concerns, and instead proposed a Territorial Council model.

Protests erupted across Ladakh in March after LAB and KDA called for a shutdown, renewing demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule status.

Now, with the May 22 date confirmed, hope is renewed that the long-pending dialogue can finally move forward toward resolving Ladakh’s political future.
