Indian filmmaker Farah Khan has strongly defended the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, calling for Jaafar Jackson to win an Oscar next year for his portrayal of the pop legend. The film, released worldwide on April 24, 2026, opened to largely negative reviews from critics, but Khan is urging audiences to ignore them and watch it in theatres.

On Saturday, Khan took to Instagram and shared a throwback photo of herself with Michael Jackson. Alongside the picture, she wrote: “Point to be noted… Critics are morons in every country! Go watch MICHAEL!! And someone pls give @jaafarjackson the Oscar next year!” She later reshared the post on her Instagram Story, adding, “This film is for us fans and not for the critics. Loved Michael.”

Michael marks the acting debut of 29-year-old Jaafar Jackson, who plays lead role. After a two-year casting process, director Antoine Fuqua confirmed Jackson’s casting in December 2023. Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, approved the choice, stating Jaafar “embodies” her son. The film is distributed by Lionsgate in the United States and Universal Pictures internationally.

Early reviews praise Jaafar’s performance and the musical sequences, though some critics question the narrative depth. Despite the backlash, the biopic continues to generate strong audience interest. Early screenings in the United States created considerable buzz, with viewers responding to the depth and sincerity Jaafar brings to the role.

The film chronicles Michael Jackson’s journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to becoming a global pop phenomenon who transformed music and performance culture. Colman Domingo, a two-time Academy Award nominee, plays Joe Jackson, Michael’s strict father.

Khan’s bold statement has sparked debate across social media, but her message remains clear: fans should support the film and Jaafar Jackson deserves Oscar recognition next year.
