Tata Steel has signed definitive agreements with Paul Wurth, S.A (Luxembourg), part of SMS Group GmbH, to deploy the world’s first EASyMelt technology. This electrically assisted syngas smelter will transform the company’s ‘E’ Blast Furnace, with a capacity of 649 m³, at Jamshedpur Works.

The project marks a big step in cutting carbon emissions. It aims to reduce CO2 by more than 50 percent from the blast furnace’s baseline operation. EASyMelt offers flexible use of raw materials and helps decarbonise ironmaking in existing plants. Tata Steel plans a phased rollout after a front-end engineering study following their June 2023 MoU.

T V Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel, said, “The transition to low-carbon steelmaking will be shaped by our ability to reimagine and transform existing production ecosystems. Our collaboration with SMS Group marks a significant milestone, accelerating our journey towards achieving net zero.” The company targets net zero emissions by 2045.

Jochen Burg, CEO of SMS Group, added, “This commitment from an industry leader enables us to bring our EASyMelt technology to life. Building the first EASyMelt on an industrial scale is a significant milestone and paves the way for future brownfield decarbonisation projects.”

This move builds on Tata Steel’s green efforts. It positions the firm as a leader in sustainable steel, recently named a Steel Sustainability Champion by worldsteel. The tech could inspire global steel plants to go greener.
