Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita led India’s tribute at a Chehelum ceremony for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The event took place on Sunday night at the Iran Culture House in New Delhi. It marked the 40th day since Khamenei was killed in a joint strike by the United States and Israel on February 28.

Pabitra Margherita offered solemn respects on behalf of the Government of India. He did not speak at the event but later told reporters about India’s strong ties with Iran. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on social media: “India–Iran relations are anchored in deep-rooted civilizational, cultural and people-to-people ties.”

Former Union ministers Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, a BJP leader, and Salman Khurshid, a senior Congress figure, also joined the gathering. The programme started at 7 pm and lasted until 11 pm. It began with speeches by Naqvi, Khurshid, and Iranian Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali, followed by religious rituals.

Senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs attended, showing the event’s high diplomatic weight. Representatives from Jamat-e-Islami, as well as Sikh and Jain communities, were present. This mix highlighted the multi-faith support for the mourning.

Khamenei’s death sparked a war between Iran, the US, and Israel. The conflict lasted six weeks before a ceasefire last Tuesday. India’s presence signals steady relations with Tehran amid West Asia tensions.

The ceremony reflects Shia tradition for the 40th day after death, with prayers and remembrance. Margherita’s role underscores respect for Iran’s sentiments.
