In a rare show of cross-border unity, 14 former international cricket captains, including Indian icons Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, have urged Pakistan’s government to ensure fair and humane treatment for jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The appeal, addressed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, highlights concerns over Khan’s deteriorating health, including serious vision problems, after over two years in custody.

The joint statement praises Khan’s legacy as Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning captain and a global all-rounder icon, emphasizing values of sportsmanship and humanity over politics. Signatories like Australia’s Greg Chappell, England’s Michael Atherton and West Indies’ Clive Lloyd demand immediate medical attention from specialists of his choice, dignified detention conditions, family visits and transparent legal access. Gavaskar, a longtime friend and rival, called the situation “terrible,” recalling their shared history from Khan’s early days.

Khan has been in solitary confinement since August 2023, with jail authorities allegedly ignoring medical complaints. Recent reports suggest he may soon be transferred to a hospital as health fears mount. Last week, former Pakistan teammates Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar echoed similar calls for top medical care.

The captains’ list includes Allan Border, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Michael Brearley and Stephen Waugh. Their plea invokes cricket’s role as a bridge between nations, urging Pakistan to uphold decency for a democratically elected leader and sporting legend.

This intervention transcends India-Pakistan tensions, rooted in respect earned on the field.
