The Indian government is developing a comprehensive digital portal to monitor green hydrogen from production through to final consumption, preparing for mass deployment by the end of the decade. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Secretary Santosh Sarangi confirmed the initiative will track manufacturing, certification, and sector-wide usage, ensuring transparency in the emerging clean energy supply chain.
This system follows the recent notification of India’s green hydrogen certification framework, which establishes clear definitions and strict carbon emission thresholds. “We are now working on a portal for tracking and tracing green hydrogen manufacturing and utilisation,” Sarangi said, emphasizing its readiness ahead of commercial plants operational between 2028 and 2029.
Green hydrogen, produced via renewable-powered electrolysis, positions India as a renewable energy powerhouse, targeting 5 million tonnes per annum production. For achieving this demand nearly 120 GW of additional renewable capacity will be needed, underscoring the scale of infrastructure needs.
Indian firms are securing global offtake deals, with AM Green partnering Juniper, and Acme along with L&T finalizing agreements with international buyers. Domestically, MNRE’s recent tender for 7.24 lakh tonnes of green ammonia yielded the world’s lowest price, highlighting India’s competitive edge.
Sarangi stressed green hydrogen’s role in maintaining affordable, reliable power amid falling solar and wind tariffs, now at Rs 2.4 per unit. This aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s vision for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like industry and transport.
